Environmental Awareness Workshop

KiiD organized an environmental awareness workshop targeting youth in Abuja. The workshop focused on practical ways to protect the environment, including waste management, recycling, and tree planting initiatives.
Participants engaged in hands-on activities and discussions about climate change and its impact on local communities. Each participant pledged to plant at least five trees in their neighborhood.
The two-day workshop, held at the community hall in Wumba, Abuja, brought together over 50 young people between the ages of 15 and 25. The program was designed to empower youth to become environmental advocates and to take practical steps towards protecting their local environment.
The workshop covered several important topics, including:
- Understanding climate change and its local impacts
- Sustainable waste management practices
- Water conservation techniques
- Renewable energy solutions
- The importance of biodiversity
- Tree planting and care
- Creating environmental advocacy campaigns
"Young people are the future stewards of our environment," said our Environmental Program Coordinator. "By engaging them early and providing them with both knowledge and practical skills, we're investing in sustainable environmental protection for generations to come."
A highlight of the workshop was the hands-on waste segregation and recycling session, where participants learned to identify different types of waste and appropriate recycling methods. They also created art pieces from recycled materials, demonstrating creative ways to reuse items that would otherwise end up in landfills.
On the second day, participants worked in groups to develop environmental action plans for their communities. These plans included waste management initiatives, tree planting campaigns, and environmental education programs. Each participant received a starter kit containing tree seedlings, educational materials, and basic tools for implementing their action plans.
"The most valuable aspect of this workshop is that it moves beyond awareness to action," noted one of the facilitators. "We're not just telling young people about environmental problems; we're equipping them with the tools and knowledge to be part of the solution."
The workshop concluded with a tree planting ceremony at a nearby school, where participants planted 30 indigenous tree species. As part of their commitment to environmental stewardship, each participant signed a pledge to plant at least five additional trees in their communities and to advocate for sustainable environmental practices.
This workshop is part of KiiD's larger environmental initiative aimed at promoting climate resilience and sustainable practices in communities across Nigeria. Stay tuned for updates on the impacts of these youth-led environmental initiatives.
